After four devastating fires between 1796 and 1948, Castries St Lucia is today, one of the most modern cities in the Caribbean. Castries is the capital city of St Lucia, however, there are still old and refurbished wooden buildings in the city. These buildings provide evidence of slavery days when plantation owners would ran one home in Castries St Lucia and another in Europe.

An interesting place to visit is the Derek Walcott Square, named after the Honorable Derek Walcott, Nobel Laureate for literature in 1992. A number of popular entertainment activities are held at this square at special times of the year including St Lucia Jazz, Calypso and carnival concerts. The atmosphere is superb and visitors as well as St Lucians flock to the square to have some real fun.
