Welcome To Castries
St Lucia

After four devastating fires between 1796 and 1948, Castries St Lucia is today, one of the most modern cities in the Caribbean. Castries is the capital city of St Lucia, however, there are still old and refurbished wooden buildings in the city. These buildings provide evidence of slavery days when plantation owners would ran one home in Castries St Lucia and another in Europe.

An interesting place to visit is the Derek Walcott Square, named after the Honourable Derek Walcott, Nobel Laureate for literature in 1992. A number of popular entertainment activities are held at this square at special times of the year including St Lucia Jazz, Calypso and carnival concerts. The atmosphere is superb and visitors as well as St Lucians flock to the square to have some real fun.

You will also find a monument to commemorate St Lucia's war casualties and the Massave tree which is said to be over 400 years old. There are two busts representing St Lucia's Nobel Laureates, Sir Arthur Lewis and Derek Walcott.

Other places of interest in Castries St Lucia include the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Central Library. There's a lot of history to these buildings, and visitors to the island usually find them quite fascinating.

If you want to see West Indian produce at its best, don't go to the supermarket or grocery store. You need to visit the Castries Central Market. Another place of interest in Castries St Lucia is the Vendor's Arcade. There you will find all the souvenirs you need, including T shirts, flags, beaded costume jewelry, craft products and so on. When you go back home, your friends will surely envy you.

There is a duty-free shopping complex called Pointe Seraphine near the Castries Harbor. Many visitors like to shop there because of their superior prices and wide variety of excellent products. You will also find a visitor information center there. Not very far away is the Vigie Lighthouse. The view from this lighthouse is phenomenal.

Everyday, visitors to the island tour Morne Fortune, one of the most heavily fought-over sites in the Caribbean during the 18th and 19th centuries. From this mountain you get spectacular views of the town of Castries, the Castries Harbor and the north of St Lucia. On Morne Fortune, you will find the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.
